Usage studies of electronic journals
A few papers have appeared analyzing the usage of electronic journals. There are really two types of study here: analysis of usage statistics gathered by the providing systems, and user surveys studying the acceptance of e-journals by end-users.

A study indicating that users make much higher use of electronic versions of journals than the print ones, when both are available.

Anderson, Kent; John Sack, Lisa Krauss, and Lori O'Keefe. "Publishing Online-Only Peer-Reviewed Biomedical Literature: Three Years of Citation, Author Perception, and Usage Experience." The Journal of Electronic Publishing, Vol. 6, No. 3 (March, 2001). This paper finds that online-only articles are at least as successful as print-plus-online articles. The criteria for measuring success were the number of times an article was read, cited, used in tenure deliberations, and used in author curricula vitae.
