Wieland (1733-1813) was the oldest author of what later was called the period of the Weimarer Klassik. He was a very productive, highly gifted and versatile author excelling in practically every literary genre such as novels, novellas, fairy tailes, essays, dramas, and Singspiele. At the same time he was an engaged political writer, editor of influental literary journals, and a well-known translator of Shakespeare and classical authors. He was the first author who was celebrated by an edition of Sämmtliche Werke during his lifetime, issued by the famous publisher Göschen (1794 ff). This edition was and is a true monument in the history of German publishing. All later attempts at a new complete or critical edition failed until now de Gruyter has set out to update and surpass the historical landmark of the Göschen edition by way of their new critical Ossmannstedter Ausgabe, named after Wieland's former estate near Weimar.
