Friedrich Nietzsche had influenced numerous writers of his epoch and the following century. Especially the visionary calls for the birth of a new time contained in his late philosophical writings had been taken up enthusiastically by many writers and artists. While the early reception of Nietzsche’s work was largely enthusiastic, it was at the same time rather critical and interspersed with acerbic attacks. The years after 1900 see more conciliatory positions. The contributions in this collected volume examine Nietzsche’s influence on writers such as Stefan George, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Gerhart Hauptmann and Gottfried Benn. It also looks at the reception of Nietzsche’s works in France.
