Corpus Inscriptionum ludaeae / Palaestinae - A multi-lingual corpus of the inscriptions from Alexander to Muhammad:
Edited by Hanna M. Cotton et al.
Berlin: de Gruyter, 2010
In English
HARR series ID: COR 1322
Anyone involved in the study of ancient Iudaeae / Palaestine and its vicinity has felt the need for a comprehensive work to identify all the inscriptions in the various languages of the region. The lack of such a work has been even more regrettable as it concerned a great variety of subjects including the ancient Near East, ancient Jewish history and early Christianity as well as the history of the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
A group of scholars from Israel and Germany is now creating such a corpus. It incorporates all the inscriptions from the time of Graeco-Roman rule in the area, from the time of Alexander until the end of Byzantine rule in Palestine around 640. Unlike traditional corpora of inscriptions, this publication will include inscriptions in all languages represented: besides Greek and Latin, it will include Semitic languages, primarily Hebrew, Aramaic (Jewish, Samarian, Nabataean, Christian and Syriac), Thamudic, and the Caucasian languages. The corpus will detail all the cultural phenomena expressed through inscriptions, present them within their specific context and include a translation and commentary. Wherever possible a reproduction is provided.
