New composers with Schott:

Henri Dutilleux, Alexander Goehr, Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, Dieter Schnebel and Rodion Shchedrin - these are names of famous composers who have contributed to the leading role of Schott in contemporary music. But in the last few years Schott has also signed up with emerging new composers who have by now attracted a lot of attention in the musical world.

We added most of these composers to our new List of 20th and 21st Centuries Composers and have compiled the following selective list of their works. For further information about these pieces please initiate a search in our database OttoEditions.

Please note that in future scores by these composers will come on your approval plan, but only if your profile includes category 2 (Chaya Czernowin, Christian Jost, Jörg Widmann) resp. category 3 (Joe Duddell, Moritz Eggert, Kenneth Hesketh, Tatjana Komarova, Olli Mustonen, Benjamin Schweitzer) of our contemporary composers list. Chaja Czernowin

Chaya Czernowin (born 1957, Haifa) was born and raised in Israel. Since the age of 25 she has lived in Germany, Japan, and the United States. Her music has been performed at more than 25 festivals all over the world, e.g. Wien Modern, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Asia Pacific Triennial in Australia and Huddersfield. Her Opera "Pnima...ins innere", premiered at the Munich Biennale, was chosen 'best première of the year' by 'Opernwelt' and won the Bavarian Theatre Award. In 2004 Czernowin has been appointed composer-in-residence at the Dresden Contemporary Music Festival, and visiting composer of the Darmstadt Festival. At present, she is working on a compository supplement for Mozart's opera Zaide for the Salzburg Festival 2006 where she was composer in residence in 2005. Among her recent awards: 2003 Award of the Siemens Music Foundation, and 2004 Award of the Rockefeller Foundation for two portrait concerts in New York. Czernowin taught composition at the Yoshiro Irino Institute, JML, Tokyo, Japan, at the Darmstadt Summer Courses (where she won the Kranichstein Music Award 1992) from 1990 until 1998, and led numerous master classes. Since 1997 she has been professor of composition at the University of California, San Diego.

Joe Duddell

Joe Duddell was born in 1972 and studied music at Salford University and then with Steve Martland at the Royal Academy of Music, where he became Composition Fellow. He has recently been appointed to the staff at Brunel University. His works have been performed at many major festivals and venues and he has received several commissions from the BBC, including "Vaporize" for Paul Lewis and Steve Osborne's Proms chamber music recital in 2000. Duddell featured again in the 2002 Proms in the King's Singers' "Orianna" project. "Not Waving but Drowning", Duddell's first major orchestral work, commissioned by the BBC and written for Catherine Bott and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, was premièred at the 2002 Huddersfield Festival. Duddell's most recent large-scale composition was a percussion concerto for the 2003 Proms: written for Colin Currie and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and their music director Marin Alsop, "Ruby" received its world première on 25 July 2003 and was subsequently performed in the 2004 BBC Young Musician of the Year final.

Moritz Eggert

Moritz Eggert (born 1965 in Heidelberg) studied piano with Leonard Hokanson at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt. 1986 he moved to Munich to study composition with Wilhelm Killmayer at the Musikhochschule Muenchen. Later he continued his piano studies with Raymund Havenith in Frankfurt, and his composition studies with Hans-Jürgen von Bose in Munich. In 1992 he spent a year in London as a post-graduate composition student with Robert Saxton at the Guildhall School for Music and Drama. Moritz Eggert has been awarded with prizes like the composition prize of the Salzburger Osterfestspiele, the Schneider/Schott-prize, the "Ad Referendum"-prize in Montréal, the Siemens Förderpreis for young composers, and the Zemlinsky Prize. His concert-length cycle for piano solo, "Hämmerklavier", has been a great international success with reviewers and audiences alike. Moritz Eggert has covered all genres in his work - his oeuvre includes 5 large-scale operas, ballets, and works for dance and music theatre, often with unusual performance elements.

Atsuhiko Gondai

Atsuhiko Gondai (born in 1965 in Tokyo) studied composition at Toho Gakuen School of Music, and from 1990 to 1992 attended the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. From 1993 to 1994 he was resident in Paris as a researcher in the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists, and until 1995 studied computer music at the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM). He studied composition with Yasuo Sueyoshi, Klaus Huber and Salvatore Sciarrino, computer music with Philippe Manoury, and organ with Zsigmond Szathmary. In addition to taking 1st place in the 1991 Valentino Bucchi Composition Competition, 2nd place in the 1992 International Composer's Competition "Kazimierz Serocki" and has been awarded numerous other prizes at home and abroad. Gondai has researched musical space as a rite grounded in Catholic religious belief. In recent years he has collaborated with the Buddhist priest Shomyo chanters and broken new ground through interchange with Buddhist music. In 2000 he delivered lectures at Victoria University, Wellington and at Auckland University in New Zealand. In 2003 he stayed in Bergen, Norway as an Artist in Residence and had lectures at the the Grieg Academy of the University of Bergen. He is currently based in Kanazawa and Paris where he works on composition projects.

Kenneth Hesketh

Kenneth Hesketh was born in Liverpool in 1968. He composed his first work for orchestra at the age of 13. As a first year college student he completed his first formal commission for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Charles Groves. After receiving Bachelor and Postgraduate degrees from the RCM, Hesketh attended Tanglewood in 1995 as the Leonard Bernstein Fellow and studied with Henri Dutilleux. Whilst completing a Masters degree in Composition at the University of Michigan, USA, he was awarded the Shakespeare Prize scholarship from the Toepfer Foundation, Hamburg at the behest of Sir Simon Rattle. Hesketh has received numerous commissions from international ensembles and organisations including the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, the European City of Culture (Copenhagen 1996), a Faber Millennium Commission for Simon Rattle and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the BBC Philharmonic, Hans Werner Henze and the Endymion Ensemble (in honour of Henze's 75th birthday), the Munich Biennale and the Michael Vyner Trust for the London Sinfonietta. Recent performances have by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Sudwest Rundfunk (Baden-Baden) and the ASKO ensemble (Concertgebouuw, Amsterdam). Kenneth Hesketh is a professor of composition and orchestration at the Royal College of Music.

Christian Jost

Christian Jost (born in Trier in 1963) studied composition, analysis and conducting in Cologne and San Francisco from 1983 to 1989. He has been awarded several grants. In 1992 Jost attracted attention for the first time with "Magma", a work commissioned by the orchestra of the State theatre in Darmstadt. From 1996 to 1998 he travelled extensively in the People's Republic of China and fostered his cooperation with various Chinese orchestras. The piano concerto "Der lange Weg des Drachen" for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra was premiered with Jost as a soloist. During the 1999/2000 season Christian Jost was the first Composer in Residence of the Beethoven Hall in Bonn. Recently, Jost has received commissions from renowned orchestras from all over the world, e.g. from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Residentie Orkest Den Haag. In May 2003 Christian Jost received one of the renowned prices by the Ernst von Siemens Stifung and in 2003/04, he is composer in residence of the Staatskapelle Weimar which premiered his "CocoonSymphonie" in December 2003. Two operas by Christian Jost have been premiered successfully in season 2004/05: in January 2005 the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, staged the world premiere production of his first full-evening opera "Vipern" and in May the first scenic performance of the one-act opera Death Knocks after Woody Allen has been shown at Theater Erfurt. Christian Jost lives as a freelance composer in Berlin.

Tatjana Komarova

Tatjana Komarova was born in Brest (Byelorussia) in 1968. In 1987, after her piano studies, Tatjana Komarova began to study composition at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Professor Nikolai Sidelnikov who laid the foundation for her compositional work and had a significant influence on her artistic development. The works by Tatjana Komarova have already seen a considerable number of performances, both in her native country and in numerous European countries, e.g. in New York, Frankfurt, Leipzig (Gewandhaus), Amsterdam, Prague, Athens, Stuttgart, at the Cologne Philharmonie, in Paris (Châtelet), London (BBC live broadcast) and in Los Angeles. Her "Triptychon" for violoncello and piano was premiered by Boris Pergamenchikov and Komarova's husband Lars Vogt. Komarova received commissions for the "Finale" Festival of the Cologne Philharmonie, for the Violoncello Festival in Beauvais/ France, for the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera, for the Brunswig Rostrum of Chamber Music and by the Musikkollegium Winterthur (2000/01). Tatjana Komarova's compositions have been broadcast many times on the radio (a.o. BBC, WDR, NDR, SDR, Radio France) and on television (ZDF and WDR), some have already been recorded on CD.

Olli Mustonen

Born in Helsinki in 1967, Olli Mustonen took his first harpsichord lessons at the age of five and was taught to play the piano by Ralf Gothóni at the age of seven. A year later he made his first composition attempts, and from 1975 studied composition with Einoiuhani Rautavaara. Soon, Mustonen was much sought after, both as a conductor and as a concert pianist (studies with Eero Heinonen). As a pianist, Mustonen has given concerts with numerous major international orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orkest, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonics, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and others. Mustonen's predilection for contrapuntally interwoven compositions and works of the 20th century which take up ideas from the 17th and 18th centuries (e.g. the Bach arrangements by Ferruccio Busoni and the cycles of preludes and fugues by Paul Hindemith or Shostakovich), is reflected in his own works as well. His style is often referred to as neo-baroque or neo-classical. It is characterized by simple rhythms, scaled down instrumentation (strings and a few wind instruments), and the use of genre names as work titles, e.g. Gavotte, Toccata or Petite Suite. While it is the pianist who is to the fore in the concert halls throughout the world, it is the conducting and composing activities of Mustonen which are becoming of growing interest to the public. As both, a composer and an interpreter, he is "artist in residence" at the Usedom Music Festival in October 2005.

Benjamin Schweitzer

Benjamin Schweitzer (born in Marburg an der Lahn in 1973) studied at the Lübeck Hochschule für Musik and at the Dresden Musikhochschule with Wilfried Krätschmar (composition), Jörg Herchet (music theory), Wilfried Jentzsch (electronic music) and Christian Kluttig (conducting). In 1998/99 he studied with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki. In the same year he was awarded the Förderpreis des Sächsischen Musikbundes. He was recognized as a composer as early as 1991. His works have since been performed in Germany and abroad (e.g. Finland, USA, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Sweden). Some of his compositions were also recorded on CD or broadcast by the radio (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and Radio Bremen). Moreover Schweitzer received commissions e.g. by the Dresden Zentrum für zeitgenössische Musik (DZzM) and renowned interpreters like Roland Herrmann (baritone).

Jörg Widman

Jörg Widmann was born in Munich in 1973. He studied clarinet at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Widmann received several prizes as clarinetist and performed with famous international and national orchestras. Jörg Widmann is one of the most emerging composers of his generation. He studied composition with Hans Werner Henze, Wilfried Hiller and Wolfgang Rihm. In 1999 he received the Belmont-Preis für zeitgenössische Musik of the Forberg-Schneider-Stiftung for his achievements in composition. In 2002 Jörg Widmann received on 16 June the Schneider-Schott-Musikpreis und on 15 August the Paul-Hindemith-Preis. In 2003 Jörg Widmann received one of the renowned prices by the Ernst von Siemens Stifung and the honorary award of the Munich Opern-Festspiele. His music was performed by prominent ensembles and orchestras, among them the Ensemble Modern, Guildhall String Chamber Ensemble, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra Münchener Kammerorchester, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Klangforum Wien, Bamberger Symphoniker, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt, NDR Sinfonieorchester, Münchner Philharmoniker, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling, Heinz Holliger, Kent Nagano, Jonathan Nott and Christian Thielemann.
