Special Offer (July 2006) Hans Werner Henze: 80th Birthday on July 1, 2006
After the Second World War he resumed his formal education studying with Wolfgang Fortner and composed his first works in an elegant neo-classical style that while borrowing from Stravinsky and Hindemith already demonstrate the innate lyrical gift so typical of Henze's music in all its phases. In the late 1940s, Henze attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses and explored serialism. But in 1953 Henze left Germany and moved to Italy, where the complete change of scenery and culture brought a new richness and color into his music. After a period of overt political engagement in the late 1960s and 1970s, he turned again to more traditional forms. Henze's abundant creative powers remain undimmed: his latest opera "L'Upupa and the triumph of filial love" was successfully premièred at the Salzburg Festival 2003. His latest orchestral work "Sebastian im Traum" (2004) was commissioned and performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich and the New York Philharmonic. HARRASSOWITZ has compiled the following list of some recent editions of works by Henze. For further works by Hans Werner Henze please initiate a search in our database OttoEditions.
