The prestigious award will be presented to Reimann by the President of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in a musical ceremony in the Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich on 24 May 2011. The Ernst von Siemens Music Prize entails a cash endowment of 200,000 euros and is awarded for outstanding services to contemporary music. The annual prize is presented in alternate years to a composer and a figure from a different sphere of the musical world. The Foundation additionally awards encouragement prizes to young composers and supports over 100 contemporary music projects in over twenty countries throughout the world.
Aribert Reimann was born in Berlin in 1936. After studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, where his composition teacher was Boris Blacher, he worked as repetiteur at the Deutsche Oper. The activity of accompanying singers at the piano has had an impact on his compositional activity throughout his career. As a pianist, he performed regularly with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. It was Fischer-Dieskau who suggested to Reimann that he write an opera based on 'King Lear', a play that defeated many opera composers' aspirations. However, Reimann's 'Lear' was widely considered a success and established his reputation when it was performed in Munich in 1975 with Fischer-Dieskau in the title role. Opera and vocal music have dominated his output ever since, and his latest opera 'Medea' was critically acclaimed when it premièred in Vienna in 2010.
