Das Buch vom erfüllten Leben - Zauber des Alltags in Bildern der Gotik:
Facsimile edition limited to 980 copies of the manuscript held by the Free Library of Philadelphia (signature Widener 1).
Luzern : Faksimile Verlag, 2005

At first sight the facsimile looks like a Book of Hours, but in fact it is a charming picture book of the medieval secular world. It comes in the form of a guidebook of happiness in matrimony for a young noble couple that just got married. The epos in verse was written by Jacques Bruyant, a clergyman of Paris, around 1342. There are many copies of the text that have been preserved, but the only illuminated copy is the one residing in the Free Library of Philadelphia.
There are 74 goldplated initials and 46 splendid miniatures to this manuscript that originated in the circles of the Bedford master in Paris around 1410. It is one of the highlights of Gothic illumination. The detail is important, and the artist took delight in depicting the small objects of daily life, the clothes and toys in the living room, the furniture of the bedroom, the tools of the craftsmen and farmers in the fields and on the building sites. In fact, the facsimile is a delightful introduction into the daily life of the middle ages.
