News Release (October 2006)
HARRASSOWITZ is ISBN 13 compliant:ISBN 13, EAN (European Article Number) as well as ISBN 10 are indexed and can be searched in OttoEditions, the HARRASSOWITZ online management system for monographs and music scores. The validation algorithm has been implemented so that invalid ISBNs 13 can be identified. Title displays in OttoEditions, on notification and book slips, electronic invoices, status reports, title lists, etc. include ISBN 13, ISBN 10 as well as the EAN (if not identical with ISBN 13). Paper invoices only show one number and that is either ISBN 13 or the HARRASSOWITZ title ID. MARC 21 records contain ISBN 13 in tag 20 as well as in tag 24 (first indicator 3). Multiple occurances of ISBNs 13 (i.e. coproduction of 2 publishers, etc.) are recorded in tag 20 whereas tag 24 contains only the first ISBN 13. HARRASSOWITZ has been testing with the leading bibliographic utilities and Integrated Library System vendors. Confirmation has been received that the HARRASSOWITZ MARC files containing ISBN 13 could be successfully loaded. HARRASSOWITZ is prepared to process EDIFACT orders that contain ISBNs 13. For EDIFACT invoices the first ISBN 13 is being recorded as EAN in the LIN segment. Subsequent ISBNs 13 are given in the PIA segment according to EDItEUR recommendations. All ISBNs 10 have been converted to ISBNs 13, but they have been kept in the HARRASSOWITZ database. Thus, ISBNs will be stored in both forms, ISBN 10 as well as ISBN 13, for ongoing easy identification of bibliographic information and matching and duplication check purposes. This means that orders submitted after January 2007 can be placed even if they only have an ISBN 10. BISAC is not a valid choice for electronic ordering any longer since it will not accommodate ISBN 13. HARRASSOWITZ recommends to switch to EDIFACT purchase orders. HARRASSOWITZ has made arrangements to accommodate the 14-digit GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) that is presently under discussion among the standard bodies. HARRASSOWITZ is likewise prepared for the change of the 10-digit ISMN to ISMN 13. In contrast to the ISBN 13 which is announced for January 2007, no date can be projected yet as to when the switch from ISMN 10 to ISMN 13 will be implemented.
